9-1-1 Safety for Kids

There are three basic messages for our 9-1-1 education program: when to call 9-1-1, how to call 9-1-1, and what to say in case of a police, fire, medical or poison emergency. BEFORE DIALING 9-1-1, MAKE SURE IT'S A TRUE EMERGENCY.

AND IF YOU'RE NOT SURE IF SOMETHING IS A REAL

EMERGENCY, GO AHEAD AND CALL 9-1-1 JUST TO BE SAFE.
You can use lots of different phones to call 9-1-1:

pay phones, cell phones, phones with curly cords,

and cordless phones. But if the power goes out,

some phones may not work.
Once you get through to the 9-1-1 call taker, make sure you

speak clearly and loudly.Stay on the line and try to stay calm.
Know your location so you can tell the 9-1-1

call taker where the emergency is (like road

names, street addresses, or nearby landmarks).
Answer all the 9-1-1 call taker's questions.

Always tell the truth. If you don't know

the answer, it's okay to say, I don't know.
Lastly, and this is really important, only

practice calling on a pretend phone. Don't

call 9-1-1 for fun. It's not a game. These

three little numbers can save a life!
